Mohave College secures 3–2 victory over Otero College in NJCAA national championship match
The Mohave College men’s soccer team earned a hard-fought 3–2 victory over Otero College Monday afternoon at the Daytona State College Soccer Complex in Daytona Beach, advancing in the NJCAA National Championship tournament.
MOHAVE COUNTY – The Mohave College men’s soccer team earned a hard-fought 3–2 victory over Otero College Monday afternoon at the Daytona State College Soccer Complex in Daytona Beach, advancing in the NJCAA National Championship tournament.
Mohave opened the scoring in the 18th minute when Alan Salgado buried his 16th goal of the season off an assist from Mauricio Velazquez, putting the Bighorns ahead 1–0. Otero responded in the 36th minute with a strike from Jayden Bennett, but Mohave quickly regained control. Just 42 seconds later, Lazzar Ramos delivered an unassisted goal to send Mohave into halftime with a 2–1 lead.
The Bighorns added to their advantage early in the second half, as Mauricio Velazquez finished a pass from Ramos in the 46th minute, extending the lead to 3–1. Otero fought back with a goal from Renan Oliveira in the 49th minute, but Mohave’s back line held firm the rest of the way.
Goalkeeper Chase Radford recorded four saves in the win, improving his season record to 11–1. Mohave totaled 15 shots, including eight on target, while Otero tallied 17 shots with six on goal.
With the victory, Mohave College improves to 18-1-0 on the season and continues its pursuit of a national title.
