The Mohave College women’s soccer team delivered an impressive home performance Saturday, defeating Cochise College 2–0 at Firebird Field.
After a scoreless first half, the Bighorns found their rhythm early in the second period. In the 46th minute, sophomore forward Magaly Guzman-Lopez put Mohave on the board, finishing a precise pass from Brianne Kumashiro, with Estephanie Montiel-Silva also assisting on the play. Guzman-Lopez struck again just seven minutes later, securing her brace off another assist from Kumashiro to give the Bighorns a commanding 2–0 lead.
Mohave’s defense stayed sharp throughout the match, with goalkeeper Evelyn Montiel-Silva recording four key saves to preserve the clean sheet. The backline, anchored by Maya Tamara Davis and Anela Hoohuli, kept Cochise’s offense limited to just four shots on goal despite 11 total attempts.
“This week is the most important one of our season as we have one game Saturday against Yavapai College, and we’re ahead of them in the standings with three games left,” said Robert Podeyn, Women’s Head Coach. “We’re in control of the final playoff spot and need to win or tie to keep control and Yavapai is right behind us needing to win. This will be an intense game with playoff implications.”
The team will be back in action Saturday, Oct. 11, for another home match at Firebird Field. Kickoff is set for 4:30 p.m. as Mohave College hosts Yavapai College. To view the full soccer schedule visit mohavesoccer.com
