MOHAVE COUNTY – Mohave Community College Women’s Soccer secured the first-ever home win in program history on Tuesday, Oct. 8, topping Community Christian College 11-0 at Firebird Field.
Women’s Head Coach Robert Podeyn says Tuesday night was a “game we needed,” adding that the Bighorns were battling illness as well as injuries. Even with those obstacles, Mohave Community College Women’s Soccer put double digits on the board while finishing the game with a shutout.
“It was nice to have a game where we could work on possession and moving the ball, and even have the chance to attack and score some goals,” Podeyn says. “This ended up being our first home win in program history, so that’s a big accomplishment.”
Tuesday marked the second time the two squads have played this season, with the Bighorns also winning that first match in September by a substantial margin.
Goals and assists for the Bighorns Tuesday night were as follows: Emily Sullivan, Magaly Guzman-Lopez (Emily Sullivan), Magaly Guzman-Lopez (Alexia DeSantiago), Alexia DeSantiago, Lauren Keller, Nyri Alozian, Magaly Guzman-Lopez, Sofia Zavala, Magaly Guzman-Lopez (Emily Sullivan), Nyri Alozian and Taylor Agee.
“We’ve been improving every game and we have three games left, so we’ll look to continue that in the next three matches,” Podeyn says.
Up next for the Bighorns is Yavapai College in Prescott, also for the second time this year. The first game between the Bighorns and the Roughriders ended in a 1-1 draw at Firebird Field. That means fans who make the trip will be in for an exciting game.
“They’re a very good team,” Podeyn says. “They’re battling for one of those final four (playoff) spots. Unfortunately, right now, we’re not. But with the improvement we’ve seen, we will be next year.”
