MOHAVE COUNTY –Mohave Community College Women’s Soccer saw a tough battle against the College of Southern Nevada on Tuesday, Oct. 1, with the game’s outcome on the line up until the final minutes of the match.
Tuesday’s game marked the second time Mohave Community College and CSN played this season. The first matchup between the two teams resulted in a 6-2 home loss for the Bighorns, while Tuesday night’s matchup saw the Bighorns lose 2-1, this time on the road.
Women’s Head Coach Robert Podeyn says his squad worked hard and actually “earned the win,” adding that it’s a shame the players weren’t rewarded for their performance.
“In the face of insurmountable odds, we performed exceptionally well,” he says. “We created chances where others were being taken away and put ourselves in a position where we could have won the game, but unforeseen circumstances would not allow us to. One clear example is the fact that we were carded 16 times to CSN’s one card, as well as had two penalty kicks called against us.”
Podeyn says the Bighorns also had two players ejected with approximately 15 minutes remaining in the contest, but that his team continued controlling their defensive half of the field up until a penalty kick was called with less than five minutes to go. Emily Sullivan scored an “Olimpico” goal for the Bighorns, which is when the ball goes in the net directly off a corner kick.
Mohave Community College Women’s Soccer now hits the road to take on Cochise College at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 5.
“Any time you play an opponent a second time, you usually have a better performance against them,” Podeyn says. “Our first game against Cochise, we lost 9-0. I expect this to be a much, much closer game. The ladies have really improved, worked hard and gotten so much better. It’s unfortunate we only have the one win to show for it, but we know we have improved and gotten so much better.”
